As destructive wildfires continue to spread throughout the West, residents in areas with high levels of smoke are being advised to stay indoors due to the current unhealthy air quality index (AQI). Scientists now estimate that air quality in the region may not improve until October, leaving many to seek out high-efficiency particular air (HEPA) purifiers, which are recommended by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to help remove wildfire smoke particulate and pollutants from inside homes.

As Reviewed’s Senior Scientist, Julia MacDougall, puts it, “Air purifiers are a product that can help you to significantly improve your air quality, as long as you are diligent about running [it] and replacing the filters as needed. Whether you’ve got pet allergies, chronic breathing issues, or live in an area with wildfire smoke or smog, you’ll breathe easier—both literally and metaphorically—once you have an air purifier up and running your home.”
Many of these handy machine use HEPA filters to remove 99.97% of particles sized 0.3 micrometer and up (smoke particulates fall in the 0.4 to 0.7 micrometer range). Due to high demand, not only are they selling out fast, but they can also cost you a pretty penny. That’s why we’ve compiled a list of five models that are both in stock and on sale to help you get the most effective models—and save some money while you’re at it.
1. 20% off: The best air purifier on the market

As it’s likely to go quickly, you can also pick up a previous iteration of this model, the Winix 5300-2, at a great low price at Wayfair. The retailer has this hard-to-find model in stock for $149.99, which is $40 cheaper than usual and the best price on the web. Using a three-stage air cleaning system with an an odor-reducing carbon filter, 99.97% true HEPA filter, close to 500 customers claim it’s effective at removing odors from their large living spaces (up to 360 square-feet), with one even labeling it the “best investment for our home air quality we could find.”
2. Save $100: This basic air purifier from an elite brand
Just like its state-of-the-art vacuums, Dyson’s air purifiers are a favorite among customers and experts alike. Currently, the OG of the lineup, the Dyson Pure Hot + Cool HP01 is down $100 from $499 to just $399 in Iron/Blue at Dyson or in White/Silver color at Best Buy. While we haven’t yet tested this model, we did love the brand in our testing of the best air purifiers, choosing the Dyson Pure Hot + Cool Cryptomic HP06 ($749.99) as our best upgrade pick since it thoroughly scrubbed the air through its HEPA filter. We also liked the Dyson Pure Hot + Cool HP04 ($649), though it didn’t remove smoke odor quite as well. This HP01 sale model has the ability to oscillate and circulate purified air across up to 400 square-feet, and reviewers touted it as being lightweight, easy to use and efficient for fire smoke removal. “[Works] good in California [with] fire smoke, barely smell in [the] room,” wrote one happy buyer.
3. Save $20: A sleek machine with useful settings
Equal parts attractive and powerful, the Sharp FPK50UW is among the best air purifiers we’ve tested for its adjustable fan speeds and efficient cleaning modes. We were big fans of its “express clean” setting in particular, which had an impressive ability to eliminate odors in just 60 minutes. It even removed the smell of cigarette smoke in our airtight test room! You won’t be disappointed by its portability, either: With a small size, low weight (11 pounds) and deep handle, bringing this guy from room to room will be a breeze. Normally $229.99 and priced at just $209.99 at Staples right now, shoppers can shave an additional $20 off its price tag by using promo code 75129 at checkout, dropping the total cost down to $189.99.
4. $100 in savings: A purifying fan we loved
For those who want their home’s air both cooled and cleaned, this Blueair Blue Pure Fan excels in both arenas. While it lacks a HEPA filter, we found it was still very effective at eliminating odors, such as fish, and also made the air more breathable for those with dust allergies thanks to its particle filter and fabric pre-filter. We also enjoyed its stylish aesthetic and a simple control panel, which tells you when the filter needs replacing. While this model usually retails at $299.99, you can save $100 on it right now to get it for just $199.99 at Amazon.
