Costco to require all members wear face masks starting Monday

Costco will require all customers and employees to wear masks or other face coverings starting Monday, May 4, to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

The requirement does not apply to children under the age of 2 or to people who are unable to wear a mask or face covering due to a medical condition, according to a Costco statement.

Member guests will also be encouraged to wear face masks as part of the retailers’ updated coronavirus response.

“The use of a mask or face covering should not be seen as a substitute for social distancing,” reads the statement. “Please continue to observe rules regarding appropriate distancing while on Costco premises.”

Also starting Monday, most Costco locations and Costco gas stations will return to regular operating hours. U.S. Costco warehouses are also implementing a two-person limit per membership card to enter the facilities. The El Paso, Texas, and Puerto Rico warehouses are excluded from this policy.

Reactions concerning the wholesale giant’s new policy are already sparking on social media.

“Won’t be renewing my membership!,” reads a post made on Twitter. “I will not comply with your mask rule!,” reads another tweet.

In addition to wearing face masks, Costco also updated its special operating hours for members over the age of 60. Select Costco warehouses will be open from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m., Monday through Friday for members ages 60 and older, and people with disabilities starting Monday. Guests will not be admitted.

Costco is also temporarily allowing priority access to warehouses during all open hours for Costco members who are healthcare workers and first responders such as police officers, EMTs and firefighters.
