Imagine driving to San Diego, then halfway back, before refueling your vehicle.
A luxury electric car that will start rolling out of an Arizona factory next year will get more than 500 miles on a single charge, according to its manufacturer.
Lucid Motors said it has received independent verification that its luxury Air will receive 517 miles on one charge, which would make the sedan the longest-range electric vehicle to date. Lucid said the results were obtained by FEV North America Inc., an engineering-services company in Auburn Hills, Michigan, using Environmental Protection Agency standards.
The vehicles will be made at Lucid’s new Casa Grande factory, which the company said will generate nearly 5,000 direct and indirect jobs. The manufacturing plant has been under development since December, north of Interstate 8.
It was the second significant Arizona electric-vehicle announcement this week, after Nikola Corp. of Phoenix on Aug. 10 said it secured an order for 2,500-plus electric-battery trash trucks from Phoenix-based Republic Services.

Using advanced technology
The extended mileage range for the Lucid Air was achieved with in-house technology, said Peter Rawlinson, CEO and chief technology officer of Lucid, which is headquartered in Newark, California.
The vehicle has “reached a stage where it collectively sets a new standard and delivers a host of ‘world’s firsts’,” Rawlinson said in a prepared statement.
Lucid said it conducted thousands of miles of real-world range testing, with FEV verifying the results.
Lucid also claims the Air will feature speedy acceleration, capable of going from zero to 60 mph in under 2.5 seconds.
Pricing, other details coming
Lucid said it will provide more details about the Air on Sept. 9, including the vehicle’s final interior and exterior designs. It also will provide more information about production specifications and pricing, although Rawlinson earlier said the car will sell for more than $100,000.
Lucid will begin delivering vehicles from the Casa Grande plant early next year.
The cars aren’t in production yet, but the company is taking orders at lucidmotors.com.
Sales offices are expected to open in several states, including California, Florida, New York and Virginia, before year-end.
